Utilities looking to manage data coming from smart metering must have a multi-tiered plan in place. Smart meters are an end point and represent just one part of the smart grid, however, they are a strong starting point that allows for greater intelligence below the substation level. That intelligence in regards to the amount of information that will be relayed through devices in the home area network, including smart thermostats, solar panels, smart appliances and electric vehicles is phenomenal.

Adya after four years of R&D has developed an architecture which addresses the requirements of global customers and most importantly keeps in mind the need for investment protection for the next 10-15 years. Our aim is to decrease the costs of deployment, make it scalable, INTEROPERABLE and highly secure.

The systems are designed flexibly to cater to the Vision of each Utility. Be it automation of billing, integrating the alternate energy sources(for decreasing emissions), peak load management or stopping theft, Adya has tailored solutions for all needs.

Our systems make use of the latest communication technologies, reduce operational costs, and can enable up-to-date business processes by using two-way communication. We provide outage detection, remote connect/disconnect capabilities, on-demand real-time reads, tamper detection and most importantly, revenue-grade hourly or shorter interval energy readings that can be used for market-based rates or demand-response programs.

The solutions are built upon our proven open architecture of Smart Utility Manager (SUM)™. The solution can be deployed to meet the demands of Consumers, Utilities, and Regulators. It also meets the challenges of today and helps plan the future growth.

   Features and benefits
Communication: This is the heart of Smart Metering roll-out. Keeping in mind all the current limitations, Adya has strategically built the communication infrastructure indigenously with no dependence on any Third party. The mesh network combined with the choice of Wide Area Networking(cellular, Fiber optic, WiMaxetc)is distinctive and a differentiator that provides the high scalability required to successfully roll out Smart Metering.

Energy Meter: Adya’s Smart energy Meter is built to cater to the needs of the planned growth of the Utility for the next 10 years. It has the unique architecture which enables the ‘PUSH’ing of data (as a comparative advantage over querying or ‘pulling’ data), that efficiently supports DR/DSM, OMS, Audit, Integration of water and gas meters, HAN, HDU and other services.

Software: The Smart Utility Manager (SUM)™ is built on open architecture, is modular and supports various communication formats. It supports both the Oracle and SQL Server and is built to work on both Web-based and windows based versions. The SUM is seamlessly integrated with the Energy Meter via the communication to give a complete end-to-end integration.

Security: The whole solution from ADYA is designed for the highest level of security both at Application and Network level.

Smart Distribution: Integrating the solar & wind energy into the grid, providing and enabling Net Metering and empowering consumers with live data to decide on various money-saving schemes and revenue models.

Most of the utilities have a large installed base of meters which have been put up in the last few years, without the ‘smart metering’ capability. Even those of these meters that have communication output, can be retrofitted using our unique cost-saving solution. This decreases the roll-out costs for the Utility.

Adya’s products can easily be “plugged” into existing locations, and be rolled out as needed in very cost efficient ways. Wherever there is an existing meter which has a modular architecture, it is possible to retro-fit the meter with the AMI solution from Adya and upgrade it to make it a Smart Meter. This will enable the meter in getting under the umbrella of Smart Metering and can capture the essential data from the meter to the command center.

The solution is deployable with the choice of communication like RF Mesh or Cellular.

The solution of Adya’s Distributor Transformer Automation enables the electric utility to monitor various parameters of the Transformer. The Current Transformer is fitted with Cellular based modems which transmit the data effectively over the network to the MDM via Adya’s Smart Utility Manager –DT module. Transfer of data from the Transformer can be configured at periodic intervals as desired by the Utility like 15/30/60 minutes or also can be collected on-demand.

The data which can be captured for the RYB phases of the Transformer are Current, Voltage, Power Quality. This data is then analyzed by the SUM-DT and assists the Utility in identifying and making critical decisions.

As the gap between Demand and supply increases worldwide by an average of 10-13% year-on-year, peak load management becomes imperative. During peak electricity load time zones or during emergency situations, industries or buildings participating in the Demand Response system are paid to shed their non-critical loads. This reduces the stress on the distribution network, prevents it from collapsing and offsets the need for peak-load generation, which definitely saves the cost of procurement at peak generation. Peak generation also is the dirtiest energy which is fired up normally during the peak load times.

The PLM modules combined with the Demand Response(DR) programs will protect assets of the Utility, maintain the reliability of distribution and reduce Green House Emissions.

Adya systematic approach provides effective PLM solution by implementing the

Time-of-use based Multi-Tariff
Deploying the load and HAN controls for the consumers.

The combination of Smart Energy Meter, AMI, HAN/Load Controls, Smart Utility Manager and the DR programs provide a very dynamic and granular level of PLM. Adya’s energy meters’architecture supports an implementation to the point of full compliance with standards (DLMS).

Flexible tariffs have been deployed as a mechanism to provide incentives through price signals for customers to reduce demand at peak times and increase demand at off-peak times. Because electricity cannot be stored efficiently, it has to be generated, transmitted and distributed at the time of use. Generation and network capacity to be built to meet peak requirements in each case, and the more "peaky" the load, the less efficiently the capacity used. Spreading the demand for electricity more evenly across different time periods makes more efficient use of the generation and network capacity.

One of the biggest challenges faced by the Utility industry is the Interoperability of the Energy Meters. There is a lot of discussions in the industry about this topic. We recommend that whatever meter you decide on, be sure that you are not locked into a proprietary system which will make it difficult for you to change energy supplier in the future. You should check carefully to make sure your new meter will not be 'locked-in' to one supplier.

Ambiguities around the standards that govern interoperability across the end-to-end smart metering process not only put the brakes on this preparation phase but also have a long-term impact on the success of the Smart Metering program.

Interoperability standards are defined today should not just address short-term cost protection but they also need to safeguard the industry against the longer-term costs of upgrading the smart meter network to incorporate smart grid capability.

Interoperability issues are just as prevalent at the head-end where data collected through smart meters is passed on to individual providers. Although the Data and Communications Company (DCC) is set to procure a range of services on behalf of the industry, a clear interface that sets out a common language and format for all data is very critical.

For customers, it is vital that the smart metering infrastructure makes it easier - not more difficult - to switch supplier. Once again a coherent set of standards is essential to ensure that customers do not become trapped in a proprietary system.

Ensuring systems and devices are fully interoperable from day one holds the key to the success of the smart metering program.

An outage management system (OMS) is a tool that helps in outage management by handling emergency calls, detecting power failure, estimating restoration time, performing crew management, and providing status reports to customers. OMS have developed along with changes in information technology. Traditionally, OMS were paper-based systems where the outage management process was performed manually. OMS integrates with other systems such as supervisory control and data acquisition system, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system, geographic information system (GIS), customer information system (CIS), distribution management system (DMS) and meter data management (MDM) for effective outage management. OMS uses the information from other systems to analyze outage events, calculate restoration times, manage the crews, and provide reliable outage reports.

A set of regulatory standards incorporated by governments to ensure reliable power supply to customers will act as the common driver promoting the OMS markets across different countries. The regulations fix specific values for annual customer minutes lost (CML) that the utilities need to achieve. Customer attitudes towards power outage are acting as a major driver for the OMS market in these countries
